Whether you're brand new to school uniforms or just moving up a grade, here's everything you need to know about when to shop, where to buy, and what you'll need to get you through the school year!

When to shop?

We are open year-round to serve your uniform needs. We understand most students have their greatest need over the summer before the start of the school year. We work hard to staff our stores so you are helped whenever you choose to shop. Online orders always process in 1-2 business days, and in-store pickup is available immediately after the order is placed online.

Our stores can get much busier right before school starts. If you want a more relaxed shopping experience, we recommend shopping earlier in the summer.

Shop early and beat the crowds and summer heat!

How much should I buy?

Shopping Tips

Shirts, Blouses

3-5+

Shirts are worn every day and usually get dirty the fastest since they’re worn directly against the skin. At a bare minimum, we recommend 3 shirts, but 5 or more is ideal—especially if you don’t do laundry frequently.
A good rule of thumb: one on, one in the wash, and one ready for tomorrow—plus a few extras for busy weeks.
Mix and match from your school’s approved colors and styles to make mornings easier.

Dresses, Jumpers, Tunics

3-5

Because these items are worn over shirts and made from stain-resistant fabrics, they can usually be worn a few times before needing a wash. We recommend at least 3, but up to 5 is a smart choice—especially for younger students or active days.
That way, if one gets left at a dance practice or a jumper ends up at a friend’s house, you’ll always have a clean backup ready for tomorrow.x

Pants, Slacks

3-5+

Pants are worn every day and can get dirty quickly—especially after recess or active play. We recommend a minimum of 3 pairs, but 5 or more is ideal to keep a clean pair ready each morning, especially if laundry isn’t done frequently.
Having a few extras in rotation makes mornings easier and helps avoid last-minute scrambles.

Shorts

3-5+

If your student wears shorts as part of their daily uniform, you’ll want to have at least 3 pairs, with 5 or more recommended—especially during warmer months or if laundry isn’t done often.
If shorts are only worn seasonally, you may need fewer—but having extras ensures your student always has a clean pair ready to go.

Skirts, Skorts

3-5+

Because these pieces are worn over tights or spandex shorts and made from stain-resistant fabrics, they can usually be worn multiple times before needing a wash. We recommend at least 3, but up to 5 is a great option—especially for busy students or unexpected messes.
That way, if a skirt gets left at practice or a skirt ends up at a friend’s house, you’ll always have a clean backup ready for the next day.

Winterwear Items

Winterwear pieces like sweaters, cardigans, fleece jackets, and pullovers are great year-round—perfect for chilly air-conditioned classrooms in the warmer months and essential for layering during colder seasons.
Since these items are worn over shirts and made from durable, stain-resistant fabrics, they typically don’t need to be washed as often. We recommend having 2 or more so your student can rotate between different styles and warmth levels based on the weather and school guidelines.
Mix and match from the approved options to keep your student comfortable—and looking sharp—all year long.

Blazers, Jackets

This will depend on your school's uniform requirements, but you shouldn't need more than one blazer / jacket!

Ties, Belts, Accessories

If your school requires a tie or belt, it’s a good idea to have a few extras on hand—these small items tend to get lost or left behind easily.
Hair accessories are completely optional, so the quantity is entirely up to you. Choose what works best for your student’s style and routine!

Gymwear

2-5 sets

The number of gym sets your student needs depends on how often their school holds gym class—some schools have it once a week, while others have it up to five times.
We recommend 2 to 5 sets to make sure your student always has a clean option ready, whether gym is once a week or part of their daily schedule. Extras are also helpful in case something gets left in a locker or doesn’t make it into the laundry in time.

Socks, Tights

4-8

Since socks and tights are worn every day—and feet can get a little stinky—it’s smart to stock up. The right number depends on how often you do laundry, but we recommend having 4 to 8 pairs to keep your student comfortable and prepared all week long.

Shopping Tips

Things to Keep in Mind When Shopping

Some families prefer to purchase most of their uniforms before the school year begins, while others shop in smaller batches throughout the year. Either approach works—it’s all about what fits your family’s routine best.

Shopping for uniforms doesn’t have to be overwhelming—Skobel’s is here to help every step of the way!

How often do you do laundry? If laundry happens a few times a week, you might not need as many uniforms upfront. You can always add more once the school year starts.

Do uniforms need to stay at multiple households? If your student splits time between homes, consider how many days per week they’ll need a full set at each location.

Is your student in a growth spurt? If they’re between sizes or growing quickly, it may make sense to start with fewer items and plan to restock in the fall.

Double-check your school’s dress code. Be sure you’re purchasing the required items and selecting the right styles and fits for your school’s specific guidelines.
